How This All Happened To Be

The background that motivated all of this.

Harlan Jacobsen, Publisher I was Married for 17 years...4 kids, divorced, unfortunately included the loss of the kids.

Big relationship between marriages, that one ended in tragedy, worse then the divorce.

Married the second time, new partner for 2 years, leading to a real hassle divorce.

So I really had 3 severe traumatic splits.

Was, at the time of that divorce, in the Christmas biz (two stores) and bought for six months and essentially sold for six months, was in the buying six months and had a little time to research what worked since I figured I would not have time to go the wrong places in the busy season.

When considering publishing a newspaper for singles, I already had the experience and equipment since I had published a newspaper before.

Since I had done a lot of research here on what to do adopting to life as a single, I wrote down all the best places to go, and every time I asked some one where do you go that works, they all some how seem to want to copy down my list.

Therefore, I decided others wanted to use what I had figured out, so I decided to publish where I went that worked, and where to go locally, what to do, what was a drag etc., so anyone that needed that information could pick it up anytime they wanted.

After some time of publishing that newspaper, I decided that most singles needed to find much of this information out in a shorter period of time.

Information that they could promptly use while they had the real adjustment problem, not strung out over months of the publication.

Therefore I started and operated 3 classes a week for ten years, for Arizona's newly singled.

Several singles groups were failing at running dances which came and went, so I started twice weekly dances and did them on going continually as a family venture for 28 years.

The various singles classes I ran remember was just for ten years..

Moved away on account of a TV broadcast license I got in the midwest, needed to develop and moved to the midwest to run that.

Shortly after arriving in midwest I also started a midwest singles paper in addition.

(Son and daughter then ran the Az edition and edited midwest edition and dances for years).

After my moving to the midwest, naturally that ended the Arizona classes and speaking at seminars, etc.

Later we eventually got into web site publishing after getting out of television broadcast, deciding that the web was the future.

After six years of web publishing, I then discontinued the AZ singles newspaper after 32 years of continuous publication..

Starting up in a fresh newspaper field and still today publishing three other newspapers.

The web allows a lot more people to use what I learned on this process of rapidly adjusting to single life. So far I have posted less then half of my stuff to the web to date. Just have been too busy with keeping 6 businesses alive to do much lately other then singles adjustment newsletters, which I write in a few hours and do not have time to even polish up and rewrite etc.

In addition, I still do get some feedback, answer a lot of personal questions, problems and email's every day.

Yes, I have written a few new articles for the publication and the web over the last few years, but not as many as I would like because of the time restraints.

The archive article web posting has been on hold for over a year, and hope to get back to expanding the material available on our net sites which is time consuming to post the way we want to convert most of it.

At the time of my original heavy research I read over 200 books, plus many since and did experimenting with what worked for me, as an active single person, attended seminars on the subject all over the country, etc.

But mostly I learned and figured out what worked from the ten thousand people that attended my ten years of classes.

By the way, I have no degree in anything, though I do not believe a formal education on adjusting to single life is even available.
The people in the classes also tried out what I threw out and reported back to the classes what worked, and what did not.

In addition in discussion groups they came up with what they had accidentally discovered etc that had worked for them.

As a result I learned a lot from them that is reflected in what you read in my articles about their experience using my material and others material and out of all that what overall seemed to work best for them.

In addition I had great guest speakers at my classes from all over, some for two or three years in a row, and I eventually adopted the best of what they had to offer and massaged and put my adopted version of their information out myself, for people in my classes.

The articles I wrote from my experience that worked, from the outlines for my classes and the articles for my publications were written following each class or seminar I conducted, while still fresh, and then that associated article then appeared in the next issue of our publications.

We dig those out now, edit them, sort them and now are much of what you read on the web, on our sites.

My daughter Janet who had been doing some classes along the way then conducted many singles classes, seminars and spoken at many events for another ten years or more.

She sort of took up some of the slack after the end of my classes and she has continued on and has only recently dropped out of that now except for the newspaper editing, singles papers newsletters and is now working on her doctorate at ASU.

We will continue to post more of this as we get time to post them all up, that is.

Publishing is a thankless task and any response good or bad is helpful.
We still like to hear and know someone is making use of it.
Offices both in South Dakota and in Arizona are hopefully expanding readers to all over the US and the world.
